The people who come to us may have multiple and complex needs, including mental health, substance misuse or physical health problems. Some have experienced complex trauma and abuse while others may have histories of rough sleeping, relationship breakdown or offending. Wherever they’re from and whatever their story, we help each person to take control and move forward in their lives.
Our services include homelessness assessment centres, hostels, single-sex services and tenancy sustainment services, which help people to avoid a return to the streets. Life in these services is fast paced, as we often have to respond quickly to changing circumstances.
Our teams also work to direct people to health services and other specialist agencies to help them tackle a complex mix of issues. Understanding welfare benefits and resettlement options is another important factor. So, would you feel at home in our dedicated team?
To work in our Homelessness services, you need to be flexible, resilient and able to build a rapport with people who may not always want to engage. You need to be able to see their strengths, help them to identify their goals and encourage them to focus on the future.
If you’re working in a hostel, you may also be checking health and safety; managing Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB), carrying out fire safety and room checks; and helping to get rooms ready for new residents.
Wherever you’re based, you’ll find that your relationships with your colleagues are crucial, supporting each other as well as our customers.
“In our Homelessness services, we work with people that most of society has forgotten about. Often, these people have been on a perpetual treadmill of negativity. To help them, you need to be able to see past challenging behaviours.
Teamwork in these services is vital. Your colleagues will help you build resilience in the face of challenging behaviours, and we work as one team to support one another and help our customers achieve their goals.
Sometimes customers come to us when they have exhausted all their other options, which makes their successes with us feel even better. Although this is our customers’ journey to success, you are very much on it too.
Look Ahead can teach you core skills, but they cannot teach compassion. You have to be willing to bring your full self to work, have empathy and the desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives.”
