Jonathan's story

Learning Disability Support Worker

Home > Our People > Jonathan's story

I have always been keen on helping people, and knew that I wanted to do it for a career. I was drawn towards Health and Social Care, and started working at a day centre for individuals with learning disabilities. Whilst the work was rewarding, it was fairly repetitive. People would come in and out and you would generally see the same things every day.

Just over a year ago, I found out that a learning disabilities service had just opened around the corner from where I lived in Tower Hamlets, so I went to have a look. From the posters outside, I learned that it was a Look Ahead service. When I got home I went on their website and was impressed by their mission, values and long history. I knew I wanted to be a part of the organisation and was so pleased to be offered a position at the service just around the corner from me!

I love being a part of the service and working closely with our customers. The service provides supported living to seven people with learning disabilities and other complex needs. Individuals are referred to us from the local authority, and each have access to their own self-contained flat and support team, as well as a communal area and shared garden.

Our support is people-centred, using a Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) approach to help create positive changes and outcomes for people.  This enables you to build close relationships with the customers, as we work together with them to help achieve their goals. Being able to see their development and how they grow is the most rewarding part of the job; it’s why social care is my passion.

"The working culture here is excellent and we have such an incredibly diverse workforce. Staff across the organisation are always willing to support each other and learn from one another."

Earlier this year, I was awarded the ‘Dignity in Care’ award at Look Ahead’s 2020 Staff Celebration. To be recognised by my colleagues was such an honour, and when my name was announced at the ceremony I couldn’t believe it. On top of that, I really enjoyed being able to socialise and connect with staff from other services .The recognition from managers and colleagues at Look Ahead is like nothing I’ve seen before. This job can be stressful but the positive support from the organisation really motivates me and my team.
